Wife And I

border.jpg

W E love to sit, the evening through, beside the
     blushing blaze
That beams from out the fireplace, in little tongues of praise ;
As if to say, I well recall, the time of years ago;
Just how I "sputtered" when you came, or not perhaps for show;

But now we three are more sedate, for years great changes
     bring,
Therefore again of good old times we cheerfully will sing,
And by-and-by a few short steps on down for you and me,
We will observe the setting sun, uniting with the sea.

But if we journey hand in hand, as pleases both so well,
The distance will be short indeed, our life-book's page will tell
That we were sheaves and quite alike, in fair or stormy
     weather,
And both are hoping one Great Hand may lead us on forever.
