I SAW in some snowflakes one winter's day A host of sights and I wish to say They were strangely great when figured out. I can prove my equation, without a doubt. These flakes of snow like a mantle spread Over the fields where'er we led And the woodsman used them for his sleigh In moving his products miles away. The schoolboys were happy when there came A thaw, for a little snowball game; Then when it froze and ice appeared, The skates came forth and the young folks cheered But a heavy rain took the ice away-- It ran to the river and would not stay In a frozen state as hard as glass, But "just fell in" with the river class. It passed through rapids, over falls: It formed a spray by the old rock-walls And it came in mist, as a painting fair And the rainbow form was hanging there. It lightened the hearts of old and young As over the chasm it brightly hung And seemed to say to the lad and lass "I am the dew from the tender grass." But mining men in their search for gold Harnessed the torrent, so wild and bold, And used it for power night and day And it gave them light in a brilliant way. So these slight snowflakes which appear Have a useful mission while stopping here; ... Though we move along in a snowflake way The rainbow of hope should our fears allay. |
