OW many countless ages this great old earth has stood, Our scientific wise men would tell us if they could; But while they do their level best, to show their wisdom great, They may have guessed a million years too early or too late. Lost cities are unearthed to-day, that history fails to place Among the archives of mankind, "this high progressive race," And while we talk of progress here, the fact should come to mind That arts were lost which we have sought, and sadly failed to find. Yes, many thousand years ago, some ferthe mind conceived The course and magnitude of stars, that later lights be- lieved To be as those Philosophers had claimed so long ago, When Mother Earth was cradled, ere its people made a show. How long mankind has been here is a problem hard to guess: Perhaps ten million years or more, again it may be less; There is one thing doubly certain, known by Him, the Great Sublime, That the Everlasting Record is His perfect Book of Time. |
